The 33-year-old player will be officially unveiled at a news conference on Friday and could make his debut in the Old Firm derby against Rangers on Sunday, Celtic said on their website (www.celticfc.net).
Ljungberg made his name with Arsenal, playing more than 200 games for the English club between 1998 and 2007, before moving to West Ham United and American sides Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire.
He played 75 times for Sweden.

Premier League roundup-Arsenal fear Drogba - Chelsea boss
Premier League roundup-Arsenal fear Drogba - Chelsea boss

LONDON, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Brief news ahead of a busy schedule of holiday fixtures in the Premier League starting on Sunday:
* Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti believes Arsenal will fear Didier Drogba when the sides meet at the Emirates on Monday.
Drogba impressed during the second half of Chelsea's 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur and has been a thorn in the side of Arsenal, scoring 13 times in as many games against them.
"I think that they are a little bit afraid about the performance of Drogba because he did very well against them," Ancelotti told Chelsea's website (www.chelseafc.com).
"But this cannot decide the game, though obviously if Drogba plays at his best we have more opportunity to win."
Fourth-placed Chelsea are without a league win since Nov 10.
* Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard will return for Sunday's trip to Blackpool, providing the Bloomfield Road pitch thaws out in time.
With Liverpool down in ninth place, Gerrard's return from a hamstring injury is a huge boost as they try to kickstart their season over the hectic Christmas and New Year fixtures.
"It won't be a headache to put Steven back in but it will require me to make a decision," manager Roy Hodgson said.
"It's a big boost going into five games in 15 days, which is a season-changing period for every club in the Premier League."
* Leaders Manchester United hope to have Nemanja Vidic and Anderson ready for the home game against Sunderland after recent bouts of flu while striker Michael Owen is in the squad having recovered from a long-term hamstring injury.
United will not have to worry about the threat of Danny Welbeck as the on-loan striker is not allowed to play against his parent club. Tough-tackling Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole is suspended after picking up five bookings.
* Tottenham Hotspur will go into Sunday's evening kickoff at Aston Villa with Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart fit to start after being out for a month with a hamstring injury.
Van der Vaart scored twice when Spurs beat Villa at home and his return is positive news for manager Harry Redknapp whose side are well-placed in fifth spot.
"We have to play three or four times in 10 days so it will be a hard time but also great, and I'm looking forward to it," Van der Vaart told the club website (www.tottenhamhotspur.com).
Defender Younes Kaboul is also available along with midfielders Niko Kranjcar and Jermaine Jenas but experienced defender William Gallas is still out.
* Manchester City are without Kolo Toure for the trip to Newcastle United following his sending off in the 2-1 defeat by Everton on Monday. Manager Roberto Mancini will have Nigel de Jong available, however, after he served a suspension.
Newcastle's Joey Barton will be up against the club where he often made headlines for the wrong reasons.
"It's not the football club I left," he told the Daily Mail newspaper. "There's one or two still there but that amount of money changes everything."
* Arsenal will have goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski back for the visit of Chelsea on Monday with fellow Pole Wojciech Szczesny on the bench after impressing on his league debut against Manchester United.
Manager Arsene Wenger is still without Belgian central defender Thomas Vermaelen, however, after his return from an Achilles injury was put back until the New Year.
* West Ham United have recalled young striker Freddie Sears from a loan spell at Championship side Scunthorpe United as the Hammers attempt to climb off the foot of the table before the start of the new year.
The 21-year-old could be involved against Fulham on Sunday. "I'm happy to come home and be back at West Ham," he told the club's website (whufc.com). "This is a massive period with four games in eight days and hopefully I'll get a go."
* Bolton Wanderers have midfielder Mark Davies available for the home game against West Bromwich Albion after he was suspended for the defeat by Sunderland last week.
West Brom, who have won just two of their last 25 away games in the top flight, have striker Peter Odemwingie in the squad after he passed a fitness test this week.
* Blackpool will be without captain Charlie Adam after he picked up a fifth booking of the season at Stoke City earlier this month and is yet to serve the resulting one-match ban. Blackpool are also without Matt Gilks, Chris Basham and Billy Clarke with knee injuries while Marlon Harewood is doubtful with a hamstring strain.

When boys became men: Aston Villa at Wigan
This is a big match. We had a good victory last time out, we saw Nigel Reo-Coker make an appearance or did I just imagine that and we did exactly what we had to do to get three points. We have to do the same tomorrow and I'm not going to say I hope or expect, we just have to do it.
There is also a story doing the rounds that Ashley Young is out injured for a month and while he has taken a bit of stick recently and is starting to take it from fans of other clubs, his work rate is high and he might be missed.

Nightmare returns for Ancelotti and slumbering Chelsea
Nightmare returns for Ancelotti and slumbering Chelsea

LONDON, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Two weeks after Carlo Ancelotti said his faltering Chelsea side had emerged from a nightmare moment, the champions plumbed new depths on Monday and appear to be sleep walking towards the point of no return.
The Italian was left "shocked and surprised" as Chelsea imploded either side of halftime to lose 3-1 against Arsenal -- a defeat that left them fourth, six points behind league leaders Man United who have a game in hand.
No wins in their last six league matches and a meagre haul of six points from 24 which is more in keeping with a side heading for relegation has left Chelsea facing the very real prospect of beginning the New Year outside the top four.
It also raises the possibility that Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich, not best known for his patience, could dispense with a manager who six months ago was celebrating the double at the end of his first season in charge.
Wednesday's home game against Bolton Wanderers has now become the proverbial "must win" for the Italian who said he was confident he would remain in charge.
"We have to wake up quickly," Ancelotti, well-used to the hiring and firing mentality of Serie A, told reporters as he came to terms with Chelsea's fifth loss of a season that began in a blaze of goals. "Maybe I need to be the first to wake up."
"I'm worried obviously. It's six or seven games that we haven't won and I haven't seen the team play how we want. We have had difficulty to play our football and so this my worry."
More worrying was that, apart from the injured Nicolas Anelka, Ancelotti fielded a pretty much full-strength side with Frank Lampard starting for the first time since August.
Chelsea, however, offered little threat with Lampard, Florent Malouda, Didier Drogba and Michael Essien virtually anonymous.
When Theo Walcott added to goals by Alex Song and Cesc Fabregas to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute Ancelotti, who cut an isolated figure in the technical area for the entire 90 minutes, wore a bemused expression as a team of double winners crumbled in front of his eyes.
"I've had a very good feeling with my players in the past two weeks and I didn't expect this," said Ancelotti, who thought his misfiring side had turned the corner in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur 15 days ago before the big freeze.
"I'm surprised by this performance. I had hoped that the bad moment was over. We worked very well in the two weeks but it was not enough. We didn't play well in this game."
With Chelsea's bench containing several inexperienced players such as Gael Kakuta and Josh McEachran, it is clear that reinforcements are needed urgently if Chelsea are to revive their flagging season.
Asked whether he will get the chance to spend Abramovich's money in the transfer window, Ancelotti was said that decision was not up to him.
"I can't use any new players on Wednesday at Bolton that's for sure," he said. "When the market opens I can answer that.
"We are sleeping, this is the reality. If you play against a good team like Arsenal you can't win if you don't wake up.
"I think (Abramovich) will not be happy but I take my responsibility. This is not a question you can ask me about how long he will be a patient. Obviously we have to do better because he's not used to not winning for six games."
Ancelotti did receive some support from Wenger, whose side beat Chelsea for the first time in more than two years to move second in the table.
"I have a very high regard for Ancelotti as a coach," Wenger said, suggesting it would be folly for Chelsea to change their manager. "I can't believe that."

PREVIEW-English fans enjoy packed Christmas programme
PREVIEW-English fans enjoy packed Christmas programme

LONDON, Dec 23 (Reuters) - As soon as snow causes the postponement of a match in England, the annual national debate begins over having a winter break.
Unless the timing of the season is eventually changed to accommodate a winter World Cup in Qatar in 2022, a winter break is unlikely ever to happen for the reason that English fans are passionate about the Christmas and New Year holiday programme.
While footballers in other countries get time off, England's season goes into overdrive over Christmas and New Year, when attendances are traditionally higher than in the rest of the season.
Forty 40 Premier League games are scheduled to be played on eight match days between Dec. 26 and Jan. 5, weather permitting.
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson, whose team are due to play Blackpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers before an FA Cup third-round tie against Manchester United on Jan. 9, implied he was not the greatest fan of the busy holiday period.
"You talk about a winter break, but five games in 15 days is a season-changing period for every club in the Premier League," said Hodgson, who has worked extensively elsewhere in Europe and enjoyed winter breaks .
"You could ask why five games in 15 days is necessary when football could become a game that could go on all year round," he said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Snow badly disrupted last weekend's Premier League programme and continuing freezing weather could jeopardise some of the Christmas weekend matches. Blackpool's home game against Liverpool could be under threat if the cold snap continues as the Bloomfield Road pitch has no undersoil heating.
Hodgson will be hoping the holiday period changes his club's season for the better as they are languishing in ninth place in the table, and he is delighted to have skipper Steven Gerrard back, after a month out with a hamstring injury, for the Boxing Day game with Blackpool.
"It's a big boost," he said.
THREE LOSSES
Arsenal will also be boosted by the return of former absentees as they look to continue their chase of Manchester United at the top of the table.
Arsenal, who kick off their programme against champions Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Dec. 27, cannot afford another setback against a major rival following their 1-0 defeat to United last week, but they no longer have their old invincibility at home, having lost three times in north London this season.
Manager Arsene Wenger said on Wednesday that most of his key absentees would be fit for the demanding period ahead.
Wenger, who was forced to give a debut to 20-year-old keeper Wojciech Szczesny for the visit to United, told Arsenal's online television channel that most of the injured, such as Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas, Abou Diaby and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, would be fit for Chelsea's visit.
Defender Thomas Vermaelen, who has not played since August, faces another month out, however.
"They were all fit for last week's postponed match with Stoke and they have had one more week to prepare for this game and build up their fitness," Wenger said. "That will have helped them of course."
Chelsea have the opportunity to put their recent bad spell behind them over the holidays as, after playing Arsenal, they face Bolton Wanderers at home, Aston Villa at home and struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
Manchester United, who have 34 points, head into Christmas as league leaders, unbeaten in 16 matches but unable to pull away from the chasing pack with nine wins and seven draws. They start their programme with a home match against Sunderland.
United lead Arsenal (17 matches) and Manchester City (18 matches) by two points, with champions Chelsea a further point behind.

Arsenal to stage Argentina v Portugal international

LONDON, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Argentina and Portugal will meet in a friendly international at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium on Feb. 9, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.
The high profile game is likely to feature a number of players who have played regularly at the Emirates including Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano of Argentina and Jose Bosingwa, Nani, Ricardo Carvalho and Raul Meireles of Portugal.
Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo knows the stadium well from his Manchester United days while Argentina's Lionel Messi played there for Barcelona against Arsenal earlier this year and also for Argentina against Brazil there in September 2006.
It will be the second time both Argentina and Portugal have played matches at the Emirates with Argentina losing 3-0 to Brazil in that match in 2006 and Portugal beating Brazil 2-0 there in February 2007.

Chelsea v United falls foul of English freeze
Chelsea v United falls foul of English freeze

LONDON, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Britain's sporting weekend was decimated by heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures with Sunday's Premier League showdown between Chelsea and Manchester United among the hundreds of fixtures to be called off.
The hugely anticipated top-of-the table clash was one of seven weekend Premier League games to be postponed as conditions around stadiums were often deemed too dangerous even if the under-soil heated pitches were in playable condition.
Sunderland beat the freeze, and Bolton 1-0, to move sixth and in Saturday's only other game to survive in the top flight Blackburn Rovers drew 1-1 with West Ham United.
All of Sunday's Premier League matches were called off, including the one at Stamford Bridge. No decision has been made about Manchester City's Monday night home game against Everton.
England's Championship (second division) clubs proved more hardy with seven games possible, although Ipswich Town's evening clash against Leicester City was played on a thick carpet of snow with an orange ball and few lines visible.
Arsenal could have gone top with a win over Stoke City but heavy snow arrived and the game was called off.
"Further to a huge deluge of snow in north London starting over Emirates Stadium at 11.38 a.m. the match referee Lee Mason made the decision at 12.07 p.m. to postpone today's match," the club said in a statement.
"Approximately three inches of snow fell over this half hour period and there continues to be heavy snowfall with no apparent let-up."
Liverpool's evening kickoff at home to Fulham was also a victim of the Arctic conditions with temperatures predicted to drop to minus six Celsius.
"The safety of all fans attending the game is paramount and although the Anfield pitch is playable, the conditions around the stadium and further afield for people travelling to the match are such that the decision was taken, following police advice on safety grounds, to postpone the game," the club said.
Wigan Athletic's game against Aston Villa also went after what the club described as "freak snow".
In Leagues One and Two only Exeter City against Sheffield Wednesday survived while just a handful of games took place in Scotland.
Rugby was similarly hard-hit with widespread postponements in the English leagues, the British and Irish Cup and the Heineken Cup.
Even though conditions in France were not so bad, Toulouse's Heineken Cup game against Newcastle on Saturday was postponed for 24 hours because of the travel difficulties faced by the English club.
The French Ligue 1 soccer match between Lens and Caen was also put back to Sunday because of heavy snow.
In horse racing in Britain, only Southwell survived after Ascot, Lingfield, Haydock and Newcastle were all called off. Sunday's meeting on the all-weather surface at Kempton Park is off because of the snow and Carlisle has also been abandoned.

Ferguson challenges Man Utd players to maintain leadership through festive period
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged his players to remain top of the table after the festive period.
He knows there?s a possibility one or more of those fixtures could go the way of Chelsea and Blackpool and be postponed because of the inclement weather.
"My aim is to be top of the league by January 4," Sir Alex said. "If we?re still top then, we?ve done well.
"Someone asked me 'are you surprised to be top of the league? I?m only surprised that people are surprised all the top teams are dropping points. They don?t recognise how tough the league is now.
"It?s a hectic period for us, though not as much as usual because of the two games that were postponed in December. Nonetheless, four games in the space of 10 days is a big job, though of course we could have more postponements yet."

Man Utd deny reports of sale to Qatar Holdings
Manchester United has insisted there is ?nothing? in reports that the club could be sold to Qatar Holdings, reports Sport Business.
Reports over the weekend indicated that Qatar Holdings could be preparing a 1.5 billion bid for the club. However, United communications director Phil Townsend has denied suggestions the Glazers could be tempted to cash in on their five-and-a-half-year investment.
?There is nothing in this,? he told the Manchester Evening News.. ?The club have had no approach at all and it is not for sale.?
Qatar Holdings has assets of around 40 billion, and its chief executive and chairman is Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar. Any takeover move for United would increase Qatar?s already considerable influence in the world of football.
In June, Sheikh Abdullah al Thani, a member of the Qatari royal family, completed a buy-out of Spanish top-flight club Malaga, while last week the Qatar Foundation, the charity wing of the ruling family, agreed a ?150 million deal to become Barcelona?s first paying shirt sponsor.
Earlier this month, Qatar secured the right to stage the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Feyenoord chief Beenhakker blasts Chelsea over Nathan Ake deal
Feyenoord are fuming over Chelsea's swoop for teen Nathan Ake.
The young defender turns 16 in February 2011 and Feyenoord were desperate to offer him a professional deal immediately after. However, Ake has now decided to join Chelsea instead.
"I've discussed this matter with Nathan and his parents. He told me that he really wanted to move to England and his parents were okay with his decision," said Beenhakker to Algemeen Dagblad.
"I was impressed with Nathan's determination at such a young age, but it's obviously bad news for Feyenoord. We can't do anything about it if a foreign club comes up to sign one of our youngsters.
"It's driving me crazy that hot prospects are walking away from us like this. The Premier League clubs spoil the market with their behaviour. Other clubs in Europe aren't doing this kind of thing, but the English sides just don't care."

Mancini expects Tevez to give his all for Man City
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini expects wantaway striker Carlos Tevez to give his all for the club in tonight?s clash with Everton.
The Argentine has made it clear that he wants out at Eastlands but Mancini is confident he will remain at his best for the club.
?Carlos loves football and he plays like when we were young and in the garden,? Mancini said.
?It?s the same in training or in a match. I don?t think he will be different in this match.?
And Mancini hopes the Tevez saga does not affect his side who dropped both of their contests with Everton last season.
?We should forget this [Tevez] because we must focus on the next game,? he added.
?The next 20 days will be very important. It is important that we are focused on Everton and the supporters are focused on Everton.
?The fans were fantastic on Thursday against Juventus and there were a lot of fans there. They should continue to support the team like they have in other times.
?Everton beat us twice last year, so I remember it very well. It will be a difficult, tricky game.
?We can play very well and strong like in the last game. We can only beat them if we play like this.?

SPL Reconstruction: 10 out of 10?
The BBC reports that:
Proposals for a two-tier Scottish Premier League of 10 teams each are to be put to clubs next Monday.
As part of the reconstruction, play-offs would be introduced, the season would start earlier and a winter break would be built in.
The leagues beneath the top two would be regionalised if the plans put forward by the SPL's Strategic Working Group are ratified.
It is anticipated any changes would be introduced the season after next.
We have all discussed reconstruction as being a way of improving the league. The jury remains out on whether or not that will actually work. Myriad changes through the decades have left us in the position we're now in.
I think some form of reconstruction is now inevitable. Is this the model most of us would have chosen?
Possibly not. But most of us don't have a say.
The proposals need to carry at least 11 votes under the SPL's strange governance rules. An earlier start, a winter break and fewer games might be welcomed by some. But there are alternative systems that would achieve similar outcomes.
Regional lower leagues would seem to make sense. I'm sure the idea of SPL clubs playing reserve sides in the lower leagues will spark some debate.
Not had time to properly digest all the reported proposal. If I was to leap without looking I'm probably in the "No" camp on this idea.
So unconvinced by the detail. But applauding a move to addressing some of the issues that many of us have been shouting about for years.
Progress of sorts. Although we did start out with a 10 team SPL all those years ago.

Tevez set to be stripped of Man City captaincy
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is set to strip Carlos Tevez of the City captaincy, BBC Sport is reporting.
The two met on Friday afternoon at the club's Carrington training ground to discuss the striker's transfer request.
City play Everton on Monday with Mancini considering handing the armband to Kolo Toure or Vincent Kompany.
The manager is yet to inform the club of his decision, but senior officials believe he is most likely to reinstate Toure as skipper.
The defender was made captain under Mark Hughes but replaced by Tevez in the summer in a bid to make the Argentine stay at Eastlands.
On Sunday morning, Toure was still unaware of whether he would be captain against Everton, but Mancini is believed to regard him as the best option until Tevez's future is resolved.
City rejected a written transfer request from Tevez last week and have made it clear they will not sell him in January, with Eastlands football administrator Brian Marwood declaring on Friday he expects the striker to honour his contract, which runs until July 2014.

My own experience this week suggests that even a big thaw over the next 24 hours or so is unlikely to cure Scotrail's massive nervous breakdown this week. And don't get me started on some of the pavements I've had to slide across as the snow melts and freezes on top of compacted ice.
Postponements are unfortunate but probably not surprising.
And certainly not the worst we've ever seen. This from The Mirror:
The record number of snow-related postponements for a single football game was in 1979 when the match between Inverness Thistle and Falkirk was put back 29 times through January and February.
In the notorious freeze-hit season of 1962-63 there were 261 match postponements between December and March. Some of the fixtures were called off 15 times and the third round of the FA Cup took 66 days to finish.
Apparently 1684 was the coldest winter in British history. Maybe somebody could ask Craig Brown just how cold it was that year.
SFL games off so far:
Scottish First Division
Cowdenbeath v Falkirk
Stirling Albion v Raith Rovers
Scottish Second Division
Airdrie United v Dumbarton
Forfar Athletic v Alloa Athletic
Livingston v Ayr United
Scottish Third Division
Albion Rovers v Arbroath
East Stirlingshire v Queen's Park
The Hearts v Aberdeen game goes ahead but snow related issues means there are changes to turnstiles etc. More here, advice is turn up at Tynecastle early to avoid problems.

Ferdinand: Man Utd not getting carried away with being top of the pile
Rio Ferdinand insists just because Manchester United are top of the Premier League there is no complacency creeping in amongst the players.
Having clambered above Arsenal and Manchester City courtesy, while retaining a precious game in hand, United are now obvious favourites to claim a record 19th league championship.
Victory at Chelsea on Sunday really would generate a feeling that Sir Alex Ferguson's men had one hand on the trophy.
"We are not singing and dancing about being top," he said. "We will sing and dance in May if we are still top. I would rather be there then. We just want to win that league."
Ferdinand and long-time partner Nemanja Vidic completed their 10th Premier League game together against Arsenal and it would be a major shock if Ferguson split them up for the Chelsea trip.
"I don't know if it is just down to me and him being together," Ferdinand said of United's improvement. "The whole thing is not as fragmented this season.
"No matter what team you are, you are going to suffer when you don't have centre-backs playing in that position.
"But I am comfortable with Vida. We have played together for a few years. We know each other's games inside out and that feeds through to the other players."
United have not won at Stamford Bridge since 2002, but Ferdinand has been around too long to believe form will be a factor this weekend.
"Top-of-the-table clashes are about what happens on the day," he said. "The type of form you are in doesn't matter.
"There are enough players on the pitch to win the game. Whoever plays best on the day or gets that little bit of luck will come out winners.
"These kind of games are like auto-pilot. You don't have to think too much because you know each other's games so much.
"We have played against them loads in the last few years. They are a good side. We will never doubt that."

El Clasico: Makes You Think
Summer football? Honest referees? The McLeish Report?
If anybody's got the answer to how Scottish football gets anywhere near the kind of performance we saw from Barcelona last night, please let me know. And just getting anywhere near would be a massive improvement.
And yes, changing youth football would be a start.

Chelsea to welcome back Lampard for Man Utd clash
Frank Lampard looks set to start Chelsea's crunch Barclays Premier League game against Manchester United after coming through a practice match unscathed.
England midfielder Lampard completed what was a 60-minute game at the club's Cobham training ground on Thursday, which involved players from the reserve and youth teams, reports Sporting Life.
The 32-year-old made a surprise comeback after three-and-a-half months on the sidelines in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Tottenham, playing the final 12 minutes at White Hart Lane.
Boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed after the game that Lampard would start against league leaders United this weekend providing he suffered no reaction in Thursday's training match.
