Germany beats Italy!... in UEFA Coefficient Rankings
This past round of European action saw an expected but highly pleasing development: Germany?s UEFA coefficient has sufficiently surpassed Italy?s, sending Germany skipping into third place in the country rankings. This means that Germany has graduated from the Very Elite club into the Really Extremely Elite club and earned a coveted fourth Champions League spot. Germany will thus have a total of 7 spots in Europe (3 CL, 1 CL qual, 3 EL) starting in 2012/13. This is pretty fantastic news. More CL football means more money and exposure coming to the Bundesliga, and a chance for more teams to be tested at the very highest level, which can only serve to further increase the quality of football within the league. If you want to look at all of the nitty-gritty details of the coefficients, including the past five years? rankings and where we could be in the future (hint: we?re a nose ahead of Spain for 2013!), you can find those here.
