Dean Holdsworth's 'microwave month' brings right flavour to Aldershot | Jeremy Alexander

The League Two team are rising again and talking play-offs after beating Crewe 3-2

Just before Kevin Dillon left Aldershot Town as manager a fortnight ago he said all they needed to turn their fortunes round was a "spark". Perhaps he was never a Scout but he may have been right. Dean Holdsworth, his successor, has taken three matches to reignite them. From the anxiety of 20th in League Two they rose to 12th and talking play-offs after a 95th?minute 3-2 win over Crewe Alexandra. Seven points can do that. Holdsworth, hardly believing it was little more than a week that he has been in office, called it "a microwave month".

Crewe, fifth at the start, led twice. The Shots had not won from behind this season nor scored three. They had not won at home in the league since 16 October. That and a Cup defeat at Dover put paid to Dillon. "It was a phenomenal game, full of passion," said Holdsworth. "They showed they've got character as well as confidence and spirit. There'll be some happy faces coming into work on Monday."

There were a couple of thousand leaving the EBB Stadium on Saturday. Aldershot have adopted this name in favour of The Rec which lent itself to mis-spelling. "It's got no future but lots of character," a club stalwart said of the ground. The PA, welcoming visitors, said: "We hope you enjoy the surroundings." Trees at both ends and one side explain the old name. South West trains could have dribbled stray clearances to Alton or Waterloo. A painter's pink and purple sky was backcloth to the home team's late celebrations.

Crewe are renowned for their passing game and Aldershot, after a draw at Bury and defeat of Bradford, showed the confidence to play them at it. Peter Vincenti, brought in by Holdsworth from Stevenage, should have capped a patient build-up inside three minutes but headed wide. Instead Danny Shelley rifled in a free-kick for Crewe. Wade Small soon equalised from Jermaine McGlashan's cross but Crewe enjoyed a half-time lead through Clayton Donaldson. Vincenti atoned when the ball squirted to him from a remarkable rat-a-tat of shots and blocks.

The climax was dramatic. McGlashan, a 22-year-old at his first league club, had been a flying thorn in Crewe's flanks all match. Now he chased a long clearance that Patrick Ada fatally let bounce beyond him. McGlashan beat him and the out-rushing Rhys Taylor for speed and the keeper, sold short, was sent off when trying to block with his chest but using his hand. Stephen Phillips replaced him in goal but Luke Guttridge's free-kick was too good. It was his fourth goal in five games. At 2-1 Crewe's Byron Moore, from an identical free-kick position, had found the roof of the stand not the net.

"We spoke about set pieces before the game," Holdsworth said. "It was fantastic quality." Guttridge played it down: "Fortunately it went in off the bar. The manager's big on motivation, big on togetherness. If you're enjoying it, you get an extra 10% out of yourselves."

Holdsworth, who stopped playing in 2008, has come from Newport County, whom he took into the Conference and left in fourth place. On 18 September they beat Mansfield, managed by his twin David, a first in football's top five divisions. Both have moved on. Managers come and go ? more than a third in the league this season. In Aldershot's case clubs do.

In March 1992 Aldershot FC went out of business, the first club since Accrington Stanley in mid-season. Arsenal are next in line. A month later Aldershot Town were formed and in June were admitted to the Isthmian League Division Three. The original club's emblem was a football. The new one gave it up for a phoenix. Five promotions in 16 years took them into the league. Last May they lost in the play-offs. Now they are rising again. Dario Gradi, who first managed Crewe in 1983, said Aldershot "controlled the game". Grace survives on the league's lower rungs.

Holdsworth, in his first league appointment, said he was "so proud that Aldershot approached me". Besides Vincenti he has brought back a favourite, Tim Sills, from Stevenage. They will not want for height nor, it seems, for sparks. One season at Wimbledon, where Holdsworth played more games than anywhere, the chairman, Sam Hammam, offered him a Ferrari and a camel if he scored 20 goals. Unfortunately he was more camel than sports car. As a player his career had 19 spells in 22 years. As a rolling stone he is made for management.

Everything From Turkey to Spain!

At last Hugo Almeida, Simao, and Manuel Fernandes made their debut for Turkish club Besiktas and came away with a solid 5-1 victory. And who else but Simao got on the score sheet in his first game! Hugo Almeida also got the start, and played a pretty decent game as a lot of the offense went through him, and Manuel Fernandes was a second half substitute, but he also had a pretty good showing. I didn?t catch much of the game, but from what I saw it appears they have put in the time on the practice

Martinez convinced N?Zogbia still committed to Wigan

Wigan Athletic

Charles N?Zogbia maybe in demand from other Premiership club?s but Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has no concerns over the player?s commitment to helping the Latics escape a bottom three placing.

Owner Dave Whelan confirmed the player wanted to stay for the time being at least.

Martinez said: "Charles has shown clear focus and determination to get the team out of the situation we are in. He has taken his game to another level this season.

"I feel he has still got a lot to do for Wigan and not reached his full potential. That's exciting from my point of view."

In an interview with the club's in-house TV station, Whelan said: "We want to keep our team and our players.

"We have had clubs chasing Zoggy (N'Zogbia) but he wants to stay and we are delighted."

Martinez has not ruled out the possibility of doing some business before the transfer window closes, but won't add to his group for the sake of it.

He said: "We were always guided by our injury situation. Franco di Santo and James McCarthy are fully fit while Emmerson Boyce is also back. Having all those players available is equal to making new signings.

"We will carry on looking as we are a little bit light up front as we have lost Mauro Boselli but they have to be the right player and the right character. I am proud and positive about the group we have."

Aston Villa send Arsenio Halfhuid to Volendam

Aston Villa have sent youngster Arsenio Halfhuid on-loan to Volendam in Holland.

The 19-year-old will spend the rest of the season at Volendam, who play in the Eerste Divisie - Holland's second division.

Halfhuid was a revelation for Villa's youth side last season, playing both as a defender and a striker.

Although the former Excelsior Rotterdam trainee is primarily a centre-back, he made a successful transition to goalscoring forward.

Arsenal boss Wenger: Squad can cope without defensive signing

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says they can cope if he fails to find a centre-back signing this month.

As yet Wenger has not found what he is looking for but, with Sebastien Squillaci back in the squad for Sunday?s Cup tie with Huddersfield, the manager is not panicking.

?I would not see it as a missed opportunity,? Wenger told arsenal.com.

?I focus on my squad and I feel we have 22, 23 outfield players who can cope with what we need.

?Vermaelen looks to be making good progress, Squillaci is back available, so that was the only position we were short, at centre-backs.

?If I don't make any signings it is because I have not identified a special player who could strengthen our squad at the moment.?

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is taking his chase for Southampton whiz Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as personal.

The Manchester Evening News says Ferguson wants to get one over Arsenal rival Arsene Wenger by landing the 17 year-old.

Wenger beat Ferguson to the punch when landing Theo Walcott from Southampton in 2006 and Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff two years later.

Ferguson exacted some revenge on Arsenal last January when convincing Chris Smalling to choose Old Trafford over the Emirates in a 10m deal from Fulham.

On that occasion Smalling was loaned back to Craven Cottage for the remainder of the season.

United will look to do something similar with Oxlade-Chamberlain ? perhaps even allowing him to stay at Southampton beyond the summer.

SPL Tonight: Kilmarnock v Hearts

Kilmarnock v Hearts

Two of this season?s SPL?s success stories go head to head. Big game for Hearts this as they look to pick themselves up from their Scottish Cup disappointment before a potentially season defining double header against the Old Firm.

Jim Jefferies? anger at the defeat to St Johnstone must have been partly fuelled by his frustration that this could be a team on the verge of achieving something special. What they can?t afford is too many slip ups, too many bad performances.

A tough game in store tonight though against a Kilmarnock side who will have their own frustrations at being brushed aside by Rangers in the Cup and then losing a late equaliser to St Johnstone at the weekend.

Hearts are nine games undefeated in the league since Kilmarnock rolled them over 3-0 at Tynecastle. Killie themselves are in the middle of a six game unbeaten run in the league.

A big game between two form teams. Could be a very interesting game this one. I?ll back Hearts to take the points and set themselves up for the challenges to come. Away win.

Rangers v Inverness

Terry Butcher was less than pleased at the scheduling of this game but Rangers, apparently now relieved of the services of a Bursapor bound Kenny Miller might not be relishing the visit of an Inverness side that have won plaudits aplenty since their SPL return.

There were signs over the Christmas period that Inverness were going off the boil a bit and it's now seven games since they beat SPL opposition, although that run includes draws with Rangers, Celtic and Hearts.

Rangers were impressive in demolishing Kilmarnock in the Cup and made short work of Hamilton on Saturday. A fourth home game in a row gives them the chance to move just two points behind Celtic with two games in hand.

I?d expect Butcher to translate his anger into another obdurate display but I?m not sure that will be enough. Rangers to win and set up a rather tasty old affair at Tynecastle on Saturday lunchtime.

Chelsea batter Bolton again to close gap at top

Chelsea batter Bolton again to close gap at top

LONDON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Chelsea confirmed their return to form with a ruthless 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers on Monday to keep a foothold in the Premier League title race.

UK Football

If ever there was a fixture for the champions to guarantee a win it is away to Bolton and they clinched their eighth victory in a row at the Reebok Stadium with a stunning strike by Didier Drogba and goals by Florent Malouda, Nicolas Anelka and Ramires.

Those eight games have produced 18 goals for the Londoners while Bolton have failed to find the net in any of them.

Having taken 10 points from 11 games in a dire run, back-to-back victories have stopped the rot and Chelsea moved clear in fourth spot on 41 points.

Manchester City are third on 45, Arsenal second on 46 and Manchester United, who play their game in hand at Blackpool on Tuesday, top on 48.

Bolton, who have taken one point from their last five matches and slipped to 10th, were chasing shadows in the end but, having lost only once at home previously this season, they had started confidently and took the game to the visitors.

They were stunned after 11 minutes, though, when Drogba let rip from 30 metres out and the dipping, swerving ball left Jussi Jaaskelainen clutching fresh air.

FULL LENGTH

Petr Cech dived full length to touch a Matt Taylor header round the post in a rare sight of goal for the hosts and just before halftime Florent Malouda, who scored the winner in Chelsea's 1-0 home win over Bolton last month, threaded a shot inside the near post from a tight angle.

As Bolton pressed forward looking to find a way back into the game they were repeatedly caught on the break with Chelsea showing the sort of zip that has been sorely missing recently.

Anelka seized on a loose ball to lash in the third after 56 minutes and Brazil midfielder Ramires sidefooted in his first goal for the club to complete a repeat last year's 4-0 win on the same ground.

Drogba, named man of the match after his most impressive performance for months, was delighted.

"I took my chance, I had the confidence to try and the manager said to me to shoot when I had the chance," he told Sky Sports.

"Maybe before I was thinking too much, this one I just wanted to shoot."

Manager Carlo Ancelotti, not for the first time in recent weeks, said he felt his team had turned the corner.

"We played pretty good football, with a good attitude and this was an important step," he said.

"We are coming back to fight for everything. It's not easy to close the gap but we have to try."

Ancelotti said Chelsea were still trying to sign Brazil defender David Luiz from Benfica, adding that the clubs had yet to reach an agreement

Sky Sports presenter Gray sacked for sexist comments

LONDON, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Sky Sports soccer pundit Andy Gray has been sacked after making sexist comments about a female match official last weekend, the broadcaster said on Tuesday.

UK Football

Presenter Richard Keys and Gray, a former Scotland striker, were stood down temporarily after they were recorded questioning whether assistant referee Sian Massey "knew the offside rule".

Massey, 25, ran the line at Saturday's Wolverhampton Wanderers v Liverpool Premier League match and was widely praised for making the right call on Liverpool's first goal.

"Sky Sports today terminated its contract with Andy Gray," Sky Sports said on their website (www.skysports.com).

"The decision, which is effective immediately, was made in response to new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behaviour," it added.

"The new evidence, relating to an off-air incident that took place in December 2010, came to light after Andy Gray had already been subjected to disciplinary action for his comments of 22nd January 2011."

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, added: "After issuing a warning yesterday, we have no hesitation in taking this action after becoming aware of new information today," he added.

Massey was due to run the line at Tuesday's League Two (fourth division) game between Crewe Alexandra and Bradford City but has been withdrawn to avoid the media spotlight.

Football League: your thoughts

Have your say on Saturday's action, including the east Midlands derby and another unwelcome goalfest for Stockport

? Click here for all of Saturday's scores and scorers

? More misery for Nigel Clough at Pride Park ? Derby lost to Nottingham Forest in today's early kick-off and have now won only one of their last nine league games. Still, at least it wasn't a local derby or anything. The result wasn't anywhere near as bad as the 5-2 defeat to Forest last month but Clough's Derby are stagnating. The board have given their manager commendable backing and it would be hugely satisfying if he weathered the storm and went on to make a success of the club: it would certainly give something for the likes of Sullivan and Gold to think about.

? Today was a good chance to see whether Watford could count themselves among the elite in the Championship. It started badly, then got worse as Cardiff scored three goals in the first 31 minutes. It was a shock Watford never really recovered from and the game ended 4-2.

? Lee Bradbury has hung up his boots to concentrate on managing Bournemouth full-time. Today must have been a good chance to show he can do the job on a permanent basis ? if he beat League One's top side, Brighton, it would impress the board and fans, if they lost he could hardly be blamed for a team moulded by his predecessor, Eddie Howe. The fans will be happy today though ? the Cherries beat Brighton 1-0.

? Chris Powell is just starting out too. His Charlton side beat Plymouth 2-0 in Powell's first game in charge at home.

? Maybe Darren Ferguson should have stayed at Peterborough. He did nicely today following his sojourn at Preston, his team beat Hartlepool 4-0 and are nicely positioned in the play-offs. Posh could end up passing Preston if the teams swap divisions at the end of the season.

? Leyton Orient probably aren't too happy about the likelihood of West Ham or Spurs taking up residency at the Olympic Stadium but they're playing brilliantly on the pitch. They beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 today ? it was the second time they'd scored four in the last three games.

? More fun and games from Stockport in League Two. They lost to Lincoln 4-3, thanks in part to an Ashley Grimes hat-trick (Grimes had only scored four league goals in his entire career before today). Stockport have now conceded 61 goals this season and have a goal difference of -31. They're actually two points ahead of Lincoln, who are second bottom, but have played five games more. Hereford are bottom but have four games in hand over Stockport.

The SPL's Blue Monday: 10 Plus 12 Equals The Future

Blue Monday. The most depressing day of the year.

Fitting that it was today we heard another version of the SPL?s grand new plan for Scottish football.

Forget the two ten team leagues idea of a couple of weeks ago. The head honchos have listened to the near universal condemnation of that plan.

And come up with a top league of ten teams and an SPL 2 of twelve teams. A magnificent response to the weight of public opinion:

The Scottish Premier League (SPL) clubs today reaffirmed their commitment to the work of the Strategic Review Group to develop a structure for the whole of Scottish football.

Broad support was given to progressing a 10-team Premiership and a 12-team Championship at the top of a pyramid for Scottish football as the preferred option.

The SPL clubs have asked the executive team to further develop aspects of these proposals and to update the Strategic Review Group's report.

The SPL will now consult with the Scottish FA and the Scottish Football League and its clubs before a final decision by the SPL clubs.

STV report that Inverness, Hearts and Kilmarnock were the only clubs to vote for the 14 club compromise model.

So there we have it.

To listen to Neil Doncaster, SPL chief executive, this is the model that will have stadiums full to bursting, TV companies locked in a multi-million pound bidding war and the quality of football reawakening thoughts of a Scottish football golden age. And no doubt a number of postponements causes by blue snow.

It?s unclear how he expects this to happen. Nor does he seem to be able to adequately address the fears of the sheer boredom of watching your team play against the same nine clubs four times each season.

Doncaster says a new relegation model will keep the league refreshed. He ignores concerns that it will lead to clubs playing a dismal, safety first brand of football, petrified by the fear of relegation.

The only benefit of a 12 team ?championship? would seem to be to deliver the SPL a majority of Scotland?s professional sides. That will make it much harder for the SFL to prevent a ?merger? with the SPL.

If the 12 ?championship? sides are also going to be playing each four times a season the idea of relegation/promotion play offs to keep the top flight refreshed seems disingenuous. Surely those extra eight games will favour the top flight teams going into the play-offs.

The SFA would seem pretty powerless to do anything about all this after the review they commissioned backed a ten team league. Henry McLeish has been utterly discredited by the way in which he allowed the SPL to hijack his report. Trusting a man who couldn?t run his own office expenses to save the national game was a mistake.

What will a pyramid system involve? Surely that's not just been tagged on to the proposals because it's something that a lot of people have been calling for. How is it going to work? What financial assurances will be in place for those clubs that don't make the final cut of 22?

Do we even know if this is the model that teams in, for example, in the current Third Division or in the non-professional leagues will see as the best for them to secure their futures.

And the SPL clubs?

Rod Petrie backs a ten team SPL even as he watches his Hibs side implode. It would break my heart but deliver some form of justice to this most non-footballing of men if Hibs were to start this brave new dawn in the lower division.

Peter Lawwell backs a return to the dark days of a ten team top league even as Celtic wage a war of modernisation against the SFA.

Martin Bain backs a ten team SPL even as Rangers continue to wade through a financial mire that may or may not include tax evasion.

These are just some of the people of influence who are prepared to ignore the views of the fans to chase a short term financial gain that nobody can be sure will materialise. The usual suspects with their usual blend of arrogance, self preservation and blind optimism in a get-rich-quick scheme.

I rather suspect that these men reply to emails that offer money transfers from bank accounts in Nigeria.

As someone pointed out to me today it is unusual to have such a widespread appetite for change in Scottish football. And yet somehow the SPL come up with a scheme that seems to appeal to nobody except Neil Doncaster, Ralph Topping, Henry McLeish and eight or nine SPL chairmen and chief executives.

They are prepared to fly in the face of public opinion to pursue a course of action that they are either unable or unwilling to properly explain to the fans.

We shouldn't be surprised that we are ignored. Football chairmen have being doing it for decades. But the idea that our opinions are forged in ignorance, that none of the counter proposals were championed out of a love for the game and a desire to see Scottish football improve is sickeningly arrogant and stubborn.

I don't believe fans should stop supporting their teams. I don't believe a boycott of clubs over league restructuring is necessarily a good idea.

But prices won't drop in the SPL's new era. The kick off times will still be awkward. The pressures of life will continue to crowd in on the football going habit. And I am concerned that the prospect of repetitive Premiership with tactics borne out of fear will see fans continue to drift away.

Standing at the crossroads Scottish football has, I suspect, chosen to travel up a dead end. Extricating ourselves from that folly might be beyond us.

Ferguson happy after Man Utd put aside? terrible? first half

Blackpool
Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson

According to manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United were ?terrible? in the first 45 minutes against Blackpool but he was glad they rallied to eventually overrun the Seasiders 3-2.

The Red Devils kicked a handful of points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table, scoring three times in the second term to notch their 14th win of the season, and Fergie highlighted veteran Ryan Giggs as the catalyst for the comeback.

"In the first half we were battered. We couldn't handle Charlie Adam. We were terrible,? he told ESPN.

"I don't know the reason for the first half. We were all over the place. Maybe we were too confident.

"We changed at half-time, Ryan Giggs made a tremendous difference. We started to penetrate and I think we were deserved winners in the end."

Ferguson added that he felt his side were always in the contest despite trailing by two goals at the break.

"I know the game's never done in situations like today," he added. "You know at some point we're going to do something.

"You'll get games like tonight. Maybe sometimes we won't come back but we'll always try to come back."

Walking In The Ayr

Having fallen into the football supporter's trap of self obsessed navel gazing it's time to redress the balance.

Amid the fun or pain to be had, depending on your persuasion, of watching Hibs suffer a massive, institutional mental breakdown, we shouldn't forget the role that Ayr United played last night.

It was a strong, organised performance. Yes, Hibs had chances but Ayr weathered the storm to emerge victorious after 180 minutes against a side two divisions above them. And they deserved it.

Kudos to to Mark Roberts. A veteran journeyman of the old school who left Ian Murray and Liam Miller, internationals both, with twisted blood in scoring the decisive goal.

Not Just Scottish Football has an appreciation of the evening from an Ayr United perspective. Have a read to remind yourself of the romance of the cup. Not sure the joyous pitch invasions of the past would have required pre-planning on Facebook though.

Upbeat Ferguson laughs off Rafael problem

MANCHESTER, England, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson joked on Friday he had the perfect solution to his problem of who to play instead of suspended Rafael da Silva -- just play him anyway as everyone would think it was his twin Fabio.

UK Football

The 20-year-old Brazilian right-back was sent off for a second yellow card in Sunday's 0-0 draw at Tottenham Hotspur and is suspended for Saturday's home game against Birmingham City.

He was fined 8,000 pounds ($12,720) and warned as to his future conduct by the English FA on Friday for the way he reacted to his dismissal at White Hart Lane by referee Mike Dean.

Ferguson has several options for filling the right back spot, including switching left back Fabio to the other side, as the league leaders look to extened their unbeaten league record to 22 matches this season against the struggling midlands side.

"Young Fabio could easily play right back, John O'Shea and Wes Brown are back in training ... they are available," said Ferguson.

"I might play Rafa and they wouldn't know -- I could do that quite easily! So it's not really a suspension at all," he joked.

Asked if his bluff might not be called with a DNA test, he replied with a smile: "They are probably the same."

United are boosted by the return of midfielder Paul Scholes who has a good chance of playing after injury sidelined him for the last 10 matches.

Scholes returned to the bench against Spurs last week and Ferguson said: "He definitely comes into consideration tomorrow."

"I was going to put him on against Tottenham until Rafa got sent off. It's good to have him back. He's had a little break, which knowing Paul's history over the years when he's had a bad injury and come back he's always been nice and fresh so that's good news for us."

Rafael was due to have a personal hearing with the FA on Friday with Ferguson saying of the dismissal: "everyone knows it was a bad decision."

United have a rare kickoff at the traditional Saturday 1500 GMT time and Ferguson is hoping for more goals than in their last five matches against Birmingham which have ended 1-0 or 1-1.

"In the Birmingham games over the last few years there have never been a lot of goals, hopefully we can change that trend," he said.

"I think our home form has been very very good this season and it has to be now, it's kicking on time."

Man City sink gallant Leicester in FA Cup replay

MANCHESTER, England, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Manchester City survived some jitters to beat Championship (second division) Leicester City 4-2 in a lively FA Cup third round replay at Eastlands on Tuesday.

UK Football

In other replays, which also featured Premier League sides beating second tier teams, Wolverhampton Wanderers thrashed Doncaster Rovers 5-0 while Stoke City needed extra time to beat Cardiff City 2-0.

Two goals in just over a minute towards the end of the first half tipped the game in Manchester City's favour after Carlos Tevez's 15th-minute opener for the home side was cancelled out by Paul Gallagher's penalty four minutes later.

Patrick Vieira and Adam Johnson struck for City in quick succession but Lloyd Dyer's 83rd-minute strike set nerves jangling before Aleksandar Kolarov made sure of the win for the Premier League high-fliers with a last-minute goal.

Tevez had a 59th-minute penalty saved but his side were not made to pay for it as they set up a trip to League One (third division) Notts County in the fourth round.

"I think we made it hard for ourselves," City winger Johnson told ESPN television. "I think when we got a two-goal lead we shouldn't really have been put under pressure."

City manager Roberto Mancini sported a red and black scarf over the top of his usual blue and white one as he joined thousands of home fans in honouring terminally ill ex-City forward Neil Young, who scored the winner in their 1969 FA Cup final triumph over Leicester.

STRONG SIDE

A strong City side took the lead when Tevez muscled his way through the Leicester defence to unleash a fierce right-footed shot after a quarter of an hour.

Four minutes later, a careless mistake by Vieira, when his outstretched leg brought down Dyer in the box, gave the visitors a penalty which Gallagher netted with a neat strike that sent keeper Joe Hart the wrong way.

Vieira then made up for his error when he tapped in on 37 minutes after David Silva's shot was not cleared properly and Johnson quickly added another when he beat the offside trap.

City should have wrapped the match up when Tevez was brought down by Jack Hobbs in the box but keeper Chris Weale did well to save the resulting spot-kick and keep his side in the match.

That lifted Leicester and Dyer gave them some late hope when he slotted home despite looking offside, only for Kolarov to deal the final blow with a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

"They have better players than we have but I think we should be proud of the performance we had today," Eriksson, who managed City in 2007-08, told ESPN.

In a goal fest at Molineux, Premier League strugglers Wolves went ahead thanks to a fifth-minute strike from Steven Fletcher.

Geoffrey Mujangi Bia added a second just after the hour mark, opening the floodgates as Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis and David Jones added their names to the scoresheet.

Stoke striker Jon Walters struck twice in extra time to lift his side to victory over Cardiff and set up a fourth-round clash with Wolves.

Kenny Milne's Wicked Wiki

Bizarrely enough Kenny Milne, once of Hearts, Cowdenbeath, Partick Thistle and Falkirk, is given the full Wikipedia treatment.

The entry begins:

Milne endured a difficult upbringing in life and was raised and looked after by a pack of wolves in the Scottish Highlands. The wolves are meant to be the only remaining one who still remain in Scotland and the bond created between the wolves and Milne was said to have stunned the experts who continued to watch this amazing real life Jungle Book story until they felt it was safe to remove Milne from his adopted parents and move him onto human parents. Nicknamed Mowgli by the adoption centre he was taken to, Milne was adopted to a married couple and began a normal upbringing in Alloa, although some people thought he would have been safer being left in the wild with the wolves. Each year Milne would spend a week back in the Highlands with the wolves until the passing of the mother wolf in 2001, the father wolf was never seen again and to this day has never been found.

Paul Jewell looks to add some lustre to a tarnished Ipswich Town

The new Tractor Boys manager hopes he can repeat a formula of leading teams to promotion

Paul Jewell is more than aware of the size of his challenge after being appointed manager of struggling Ipswich Town this week, saying: "We're not going to reinvent the wheel ? there's no secret formula."

Yet the Liverpudlian is one of only three men, alongside Mick McCarthy and Kevin Keegan, to achieve promotion to the Premier League with two different clubs, Bradford City and Wigan Athletic, and is keen to enhance an uneven managerial career. "You always have something to prove to yourself, to try and do better," he says.

Jewell is due to sit in the stands for the first leg of Ipswich's Carling Cup semi-final leg against Arsenal tomorrow night, but regardless of what happens when he formally takes over from Roy Keane on Thursday, his job will be to inspire a side only three points above the Championship relegation zone.

Jewell's last appointment, as Derby County manager, ended in December 2008 after 13 months during which the club was relegated from the Premier League. Taking over in November 2007 Jewell was unable to guide County to a single win from their remaining 24 league fixtures, and the club ended with only 11 points, a record low. When he resigned, Ipswich had just beaten Derby 1-0 and the side were 18th in the Championship.

However, Peter Beagrie, who played for Jewell in the Bradford City team that won promotion to the Premier League in May 2000, offers mitigating circumstances for the failure. "Derby were in a transitional period [and] a lot of people will look at that and say they understand why it didn't quite work out," says Beagrie, now a Sky Sports football expert, of the upheaval that included Adam Pearson replacing Peter Gadsby as chairman and the subsequent search for investment.

Yet Jewell's CV suggests he cannot always locate the successful formula and that while two promotions to the Premier League are a strong statement, Bradford and Wigan required final-day victories to avoid relegation.

When Jewell joined Athletic in 2001 they had finished sixth in the league's third tier the previous season and on departure six years later he had claimed two promotions, taking the club into the Premier League for the first time, and guided Wigan to the 2006 League Cup final. "He came into Wigan, got the best out of the players, and changed a few things around in terms of tactics," says Ian Kilford, a midfielder who played a season under Jewell. "He was a typical Scouser, a winner. Wigan were not always the most attractive but he got a good team spirit going."

On resigning in May 2007, 24 hours after Sheffield United were beaten 2-1 to ensure survival, Jewell described himself as "frazzled" and said: "The intensity of football at the highest level, although completely addictive, is also draining." Wigan's finished 17th, just one place above the drop zone. Prior to Wigan, Jewell had been in charge at Sheffield Wednesday from June 2000 until February 2001, ending the spell with a dire record of 21 defeats from 38 games and only 12 wins. Wednesday, relegated in second-bottom place of the Premier League when Jewell took over, were 24th in the old First Division when he departed, though the 46-year-old can justly point to the turmoil created by the club's spiralling debts.

Preceding this disappointment, though, had been Jewell's two-and-a-half years at Bradford City. In January 1998 he replaced Chris Kamara with the side 11th in Division One and by the close of the season he had taken City to 13th, before the following campaign closed with Jewell returning the club to the top flight for the first time in 77 years.

"At Bradford he was one of the lads, he got involved in the card schools and everything," says Beagrie. "We had a very experienced team with myself, Stuart McCall [midfielder] and John Dreyer [defender] ? it basically looked after itself. But he made sure it kept ticking over and that training was fun."

Beagrie suggests this illustrates a light managerial touch. "I've played under a lot of managers and it can be a case of a clash of egos. But Paul was certainly one of those who would give you a little bit of a [free] reign," he adds.

Jewell's first game in charge is Saturday's trip to Millwall. "I've tried to re-evaluate myself, tried to get as much knowledge as possible," he says of his two years spent away from the sharp end. "Hopefully we can see the benefit."

Villa boss Houllier thrilled with matchwinner Bent

Aston Villa
Roberto Mancini
Manchester City

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier was delighted with matchwinner Darren Bent after victory over Manchester City.

Bent instantly repaid a slice of his 18million price tag with the first half winner against Roberto Mancini's side.

Houllier beamed: "The finish was that of a natural-born finisher, something you cannot teach somebody. That is what he is here for, to score goals.

"Roberto Mancini told me before the game that I'd signed a great player and that is a tremendous start for him."

England coach Fabio Capello saw Bent make no mistake from close range after Joe Hart had parried a shot from Ashley Young.

Houllier continued: "I thought the boy handled the pressure very well.

"He had settled in well during the week, knows a lot of players from the international scene, and I felt he was ready to play."

Houllier also praised the fighting spirit demonstrated by his side as they made amends for a 4-0 drubbing by City at Eastlands last month.

He said: "That defeat really affected us and we were at rock bottom then.

"But since the start of the new year things have got better and this game epitomised what we want to do.

"We showed tremendous resolve against a very good side and also rode our luck at times."

Agent fumes as Birmingham reject Larsson transfer request

Birmingham City

The agent of Birmingham midfielder Sebastian Larsson has hit out at the club after they turned down a transfer request from his client.

Larsson only has six months remaining of his current contract and has failed to reach agreement over a new deal.

He has attracted interest from Newcastle and Blackburn during the current transfer window.

Per Johnson told the Birmingham Mail: "On Thursday, Seb gave in a transfer request and Peter Pannu (acting chairman) emailed us to say Birmingham would be making a new contract offer.

"The reason why the request was put in was as a protest at the way Seb has been treated.

"We were told pre-season that the club wanted to sell him, then that they wanted to discuss a new contract which we basically agreed.

"Then in December a new offer was made which was lower than the one we had verbally agreed so naturally we turned it down.

"Then the manager (Alex McLeish) said he wanted to keep Seb for the rest of the season, then we got an email saying Birmingham had accepted an offer from Newcastle.

"So, we had been in talks with Newcastle until this Wednesday when the plug was pulled again and Birmingham decided they wanted to keep Seb."

Johnson added: "Birmingham have treated Seb like cattle. Going backwards and forward four times is not acceptable.

"The club needs to sharpen up a bit and get a bit of class."

West Ham boss Grant blasts Tottenham: Get off our manor!

Tottenham
Fulham
West Ham United

West Ham United boss Avram Grant has rapped Tottenham for trying to scupper their plans to move to the London Olympic stadium.

The two London rivals are fighting to move into the Olympic Stadium in Stratford on West Ham's doorstep after the 2012 Games.

But boss Grant declared: "The situation about the stadium is easy. It's in East London - West Ham is East London.

"The stadium needs to belong to West Ham. The Olympic Stadium belongs to the East Londoners.

"I don't think we'd ever build a stadium in Fulham because that area belongs to Fulham. So to me it's very simple."

Argentinean Friendly Gets Unfriendly, Brawl Ensues

How best to trumpet the start of the new season in Argentina? How about a practice pitch brawl in what amounted to a walkthrough friendly between Banfield and Estudiantes. The reports say the game was a bit ‘chippy’ anyway, escalating when Juan Gasparini involuntarily had his face rearranged by a Banfield counterpart. One thing led to [...]

Scottish Cup: Sky's Vultures Circle Hibs

Ayr United v Hibs

The Sky Sports cameras will be at Somerset Park tomorrow night. Not, I think, to savour the surroundings or in anticipation of a cracking game of football.

No. The Honest Men are hosting Sky because they scent an upset. The vultures are circling ready to feast on the corpse of Hibs? season.

Totally shiteing oneself would be the vernacular description of the trepidation the Hibs fans will be feeling this evening. Hibs were poor, and probably lucky, in drawing 0-0 with Ayr at Easter Road. They were as bad in losing 3-0 to Celtic on Saturday.

Ayr might fear that they?ve missed their chance. But they?ll be equally aware that a Hibs team stuffed full of men who look like they rue the day they ever became professional footballers are hardly going to be looking at this trip with much enthusiasm.

Ayr looked capable of both frustrating Hibs and springing a surprise two of their own against a now almost permanently shaky defence. That?s a dangerous mix.

On paper Hibs should have enough to get through. But, as the saying goes, football isn?t played on paper.

This could be a long night for the SPL side. Penalties wouldn?t surprise me. And that?s the closest I?ll get to making a prediction.

Morton v Airdrie United

Not a replay this one, but a rescheduled Fourth Round tie. When the game was originally scheduled I backed the draw. Still tempted. But Airdrie?s defence seems porous at the moment. Home win.

Stenhousemuir v Stranraer

Stenhousemuir finally got past Threave Rovers in their much postponed Third Round replay last week. Tough tie tonight though with The Warriors struggling in the Second Division and Stranraer top of the Third Division. Both enjoyed wins at the weekend. We might see this one head back to Stair Park.

Dunfermline v Montrose

An exciting old game at Links Park with Montrose snatching a late draw. A game against Aberdeen awaits the winner. I suspect Dunfermline will get the job done at home tonight.

Falkirk v Partick Thistle

I backed a draw in the first game and got that one right. (It does sometimes happen.) Different preparations for the replay though with Thistle enjoying a 6-1 win over Stirling Albion and Falkirk shipping three goals at home to Queen of the South. Will that make any difference tonight? The Jags to edge another close one.

Peterhead v St Mirren

St Mirren?s season to revolve around the odd good result followed by a run of poor results. Consistency is no friend of Danny Lennon?s side this season. Peterhead warmed up for this one by thumping Livingston 3-0 at home but they too have had a season of fluctuating fortunes. A shock on the cards at the Balmoor Stadium tonight? I think there could be.

Ross County v Dundee United

Had he been more follically blessed Peter Houston might have been tearing his hair out at the various off-field distractions he is enduring. It?s unclear if top scorer David Goodwillie will play any part tonight and I also hear whispers of big boardroom changes.

Ross County have proved before that they relish welcoming midweek SPL visitors to Dingwall. They might fancy another scalp tonight despite their struggles in the league. I suspect United will be able to get the job done with a minimum of fuss though. Away win.

East Stirling v Buckie Thistle (Wednesday)

Another of the rescheduled Fourth Round clashes. My original preview:

It?s the Highland League champions against the second worst team in the Scottish Football League on Sunday. This game could become the rallying call of the pyramid system supporting masses. Stirling haven?t played since they beat Spartans 2-1 in the last round. Which might be better preparation than Buckie have enjoyed after being smashed 7-0 by Deveronvale last Monday. An intriguing one this though, one to keep an eye or ear out for.

They both won last time out though with East Stirling climbing to third bottom of the Third Division. I still fancy Buckie to give them a game. Draw.

Adam Birchall, the non-league Wayne Rooney, relishes his FA Cup chance | Anna Kessel

Huddersfield should be wary of the potent Adam Birchall when they play Dover in the FA Cup tomorrow

Adam Birchall is one of those rare footballers who, when he says he loves playing for his club, actually means it. The 26-year-old, known as the Wayne Rooney of non-league football because of his prolific goalscoring form, loves playing for Dover so much that his eyes shine as he speaks with all the zeal of a religious convert.

Having fallen out of love with the game, after 10 years at Arsenal as a trainee and disappointing spells at Mansfield Town and Barnet, Birchall was at his lowest point when the then Dover manager Andy Hessenthaler approached him.

"That was the lowest time of my life," says Birchall, his eyes filming over with tears. "It was very, very difficult. At the time it was devastating to me. To be honest it's difficult for me to talk about it even now because I loved football so much. Falling out of love with it was like something dying inside of me."

Dover play an FA Cup third-round tie at Huddersfield tomorrow. Birchall has scored 29 goals this season. It is hard to imagine him not wanting to play football. But for two months in the summer of 2009 he sat at home in Maidenhead and contemplated a life outside the game. His problems began at Barnet, shortly after Ian Hendon was confirmed as the successor to Paul Fairclough as manager. Birchall was released.

"It was a terrible time in my life," he says, shaking his head. "I actually went to see a few people about it in the summer, you know, like mental strength people. I don't want to go into it too deeply, I don't want to sound like a crazy person, but I identified it ? that was what I was always taught at Arsenal: to identify it and work on it, and that's what I put into practice. I'm not the same person I was and I feel grateful for the fact that I've come here and everyone's given me a chance and it's been great."

Birchall believes that working part-time in his best friend's steakhouse, Flaming Henry's, in Maidstone, and coaching in youth football helped reignite his passion for the game.

"I can't describe to you how amazing [the transformation] has been. I just walk around smiling all the time. I probably beat myself up too much about not taking the opportunity when I was at Arsenal. I had a bad injury but it wasn't that, my head wasn't right when I began training with the first team. I didn't see it as, 'Right, now I've got to be better than Thierry Henry.' Instead I was just grateful to be there among all those stars."

A cerebral young man, Birchall studied videos of Rooney in action to improve his own game.

"When I was at Barnet a lot of ex-pros told me I needed to work between the lines of the 18-yard box more, instead of running around and dropping off all the time ? pretty much the way Rooney used to play. But I noticed that Rooney had changed his game, so I thought, 'Why don't I try and do the same?' So I practised. I think I have more spatial awareness now. I've watched him, analysed it and now I'm doing it. If it works for him, why can't it work lower down in the league?"

Even before he became associated with Rooney, Birchall made a name for himself after coming up with an idea to improve discipline on the pitch that was later adopted by the Football Association and employed throughout grass-roots football.

"Everyone says it should be called 'Birchall's Law'," says Birchall, grinning, of the rule that only the captain of a team may speak to a referee on the pitch. "It was at Barnet, we went through a period of having bad discipline ? one game we had two players sent off for abusing the ref. I went away, thought about it and come up with the idea. We implemented it at Barnet, then a paper picked it up and it grew from there. I didn't know they did that in rugby, it was just something I thought of and it became an FA thing which is really cool."

Tomorrow the Blue Square South club will face a team three leagues above them. It is a shop window for the talented striker. But Dover's chairman says he is not keen to initiate a move.

"He has told me that he wants to stay," says Jim Parmenter. "And anyway, we are not a selling club, although if they offered us a million then I'd have to think about it."

Birchall is philosophical. "I'm in a win-win situation," he says. "If no one came in for me I could quite happily stay at Dover for the rest of my life and play football. But if the right club approached me, then of course I would love to have another shot at league football."
